For some reason, the numeric keypad on the keyboard stopped being usable to enter numbers. — turns out that it was in ‘mouse mode’ where its function was to move the mouse pointer around rather than to type in numbers.
Hitting the numlock key did turn on and off the numlock indicator in the status applet but did not change the behavior. To get back to numeric entry, <shift> numlock is needed. Or you can use the system->preferences->keyboard and find the checkbox to allow the keyboard to be used for a mouse pointer.
159654 .. ok now! … another one of those arcane key combination commands that is likely on a seldom referenced chart in the library somewhere.
