Retro radio? Amateur Radio

The Wall Street Journal says For These Vets, Amateur Radio Remains Alive.

“Satellites killed the military radio star operator long ago, but military veterans keep the art alive in competitions testing their ability to bounce signals off the ionosphere and contact amateur radio stations a half world away.”

Retired Navy Vice Adm. Scott Redd is the subject of the article and the theme is contesting. Julian Barnes does a nice job but his understanding of the hobby is rather limited. Morse Code is not a requirement but just on facet, for example. HF propagation is also a facet. So, too, are satellite communications and many other bleeding edge technologies.

Even though a bit short sighted, it is still a good AR article in a major news publication.
